Non è stato fino alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale che le sue molteplici applicazioni sono state estese. Le origini del PVC risalgono al 1835. Fu l'ingegnere francese Henri-Victor Regnault, che lavorò a Parigi con il ricercatore Justus Von Liebig (inventore della melamina), che scoprì per caso una sostanza bianca in bottiglie di cloruro vinile esposto al sole.
Questo prodotto fu analizzato, in particolare in Germania dove, nel 1872, il chimico Eugen Baumann scoprì nuove proprietà, fino a quando fu brevettato nel 1912 da un altro chimico tedesco, Fritz Klatte.

Gli inizi del PVC

Negli Stati Uniti, il PVC è stato utilizzato per la prima volta da Union Carbide (produttore e distributore di prodotti chimici acquisiti nel 2001 da Dow Chemical) intorno al 1925 come rivestimento per lattine per bevande.
Mentre in Germania, l'azienda chimica IG Farben lo sostituì con la gomma per isolare i cavi elettrici.

In Francia, Saint-Gobain non ha sfruttato il brevetto fino al 1935, seguito dal marchio Solveig. Dopo la guerra, la calandratura ha permesso di ottenere fogli in PVC plastificato che da allora sono stati usati nella pelletteria.
È negli anni '60 che l'edificio prende questo materiale per gli usi che conosciamo oggi: grondaie, tubi, telai delle porte... Gli anni '80 hanno infatti visto la moltiplicazione degli usi del PVC sotto i suoi tre forme, soprattutto in carpenteria.
La produzione mondiale di PVC è passata da 450 tonnellate nel 1936 a 220.000 tonnellate nel 1950 e 32 milioni nel 2002.
